Leslie J. Petig Scholarship
Leslie J. Petig was born on 19 February 1944, the second of nine children of
Edward R. and Gertrude Petig of Watertown, Wisconsin, and died on 3 May 1991. He
attended the River Road Elementary School until it was merged with the Johnson
Creek School District and graduated from the Johnson Creek High School in 1962.
During his junior year he was the Johnson Creek High School representative to
Wisconsin Badger Boys State. In 1967 he married Christine G. Brechler, also a
graduate of the Johnson Creek High School class of 1962, and moved to Bremerton,
Washington, to attend Olympic College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to
1970 and was awarded twice the Bronze Star for valor and heroism while in
Vietnam. Following his discharge, he continued his studies in forestry at the
University of Washington, Seattle, and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor’s degree
in forestry management. He worked as a timber appraiser for the Department of
Natural Resources of the State of Washington and for Murray-Pacific Corp. of
Tacoma, Washington, and as a supervisor at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in
Bremerton, Washington.
The Leslie J. Petig Scholarship is intended for Johnson Creek High School graduates who are pursuing a four year university degree with a major in education, a medical field, pharmacology or veterinary medicine. This includes an $8,000 scholarship.
Criteria
- A cumulative 3.5 grade point average or better in high school including classes through first semester in their senior year
- Student must have attended Johnson Creek High School for a minimum of four consecutive semesters
- Two letters of recommendation outside of family members that can speak top your qualities
